Our process

How selling with Charter works

Four steps. One specialist looking after you the whole way. No surprises, no commission, no chasing.

  1. Contact

Send a short note about your machine — make, model, year, hours. A photo helps if you've got one.

  2. Free valuation

A Charter specialist gets back to you within two working days with a market-grounded valuation. No obligation either way.

  3. We sell it

We list the machine to our global buyer network, handle enquiries, viewings, negotiations, and logistics end-to-end.

  4. You get paid

Once the sale completes you receive the agreed price in full. No commission, no hidden fees.

Valuation, marketing, viewings, logistics, paperwork, payment. We handle the lot.

FAQ

Common questions sellers ask

Plain answers to the questions that come up most. Anything we missed? Speak to a Charter specialist — they'll happily talk you through it.

  • How do I sell my used machinery?

Start with a free valuation: tell us about the machine (make, model, year, hours) and add a few photos. A Charter specialist gets back to you within two working days with a market-grounded valuation. If you decide to list, Charter markets the machine to our buyer network across 52 countries and handles every enquiry, viewing, negotiation, and the logistics through to handover.

  • Do you charge a commission?

No. Charter Machinery operates 0% sellers fees on private-treaty sales — the agreed sale price is what hits your account. No listing fees, no marketing fees, no commission deduction. The buyer pays a separate margin to Charter; the seller side is free.

  • How is my machine valued?

Charter values machines against real comparable sales — what similar units have actually sold for in the last 12-18 months, adjusted for condition, hours, region, and current demand. You get a target price plus the floor we'd recommend not going below. The valuation conversation is free and carries no obligation to list.

  • How long does it take to sell a machine?

Most machines sell in 4-12 weeks from listing. Faster for high-demand categories (CNC machining centres, lasers, current-spec presses); longer for niche or older equipment. The marketing approach and expected timeline are agreed before listing so there are no surprises.

  • What if my machine doesn't sell?

You owe nothing. Charter only earns on completed sales, so if the machine doesn't sell there's no listing fee, marketing fee, or kill fee. Most unsold machines either need a price adjustment after the first marketing window or a different routing (export, auction, parts dealer) — we'd talk that through with you before the listing expires.

  • Do you take every brand and age of machine?

Charter is brand-independent — we sell every OEM (Mazak, Haas, DMG Mori, Trumpf, Bystronic, and every smaller brand) and we don't have an arbitrary age cut-off. The conversation that matters is whether a machine has a buyer, not whether it's on a preferred-brand list. The free valuation tells you whether yours does.

  • Do you handle insolvency or business closures?

Yes — Charter works with insolvency practitioners, administrators, and businesses winding down. For IP-led sales we produce written valuations with the methodology disclosed, full audit trail through to remittance, and reporting in line with the appointment's creditor-update cadence. See /sell/insolvency for the dedicated IP-facing process or /sell/closing for general business closures.

  • Where is Charter based?

Charter Machinery is UK-based — yard and team in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. We collect machines from sites across the UK and ship to buyers in 52 countries. Site visits, valuations, and on-site assessments are handled by Charter's team directly.
